  • Your Welcome. By definition what makes a banjo is the the resonator head, that of skin or common nowa days is the plastic type drum heads. Originally banjos were made by african slaves made from gourds that usually had calf skin stretched over them. As far as the stuff we build and call a banjo is concerned it can be confusing. For instance I built what I call a CBG Banjo from 2 cigar boxes to resemble a traditional resonator style banjo. Check my pics to see what Im talking about. Although by definition it isnt actually a banjo, I built it in the spirit of the banjo.
  • Hey Barrie, Ta for the friend thingy : ) Nice CBG guitars you have made, well done !!!
  • Hello,
I have started a CBN group entitled, "How to Play CBG" It is my hope and intention to encourage the "Wealth of Talent" here on the Nation to share their knowledge and skill to further the CBG movement. Please consider contributing an instructional "video" link to this group. If you are a viewer seeking instruction, please feel free to write. If you have any suggestions or know other players who you think may want to post instructional "video" links, please contact me. Thank you for your interest and support, Keni Lee
  • Thank you Barrie for the warm welcome and your interest in my instructional CDs. Good Luck hunting for a job. Definately, some tough times we are living in today. Take care.
  • Hi Barrie, welcome on board!
  • Fantastic! chaos in Maplin is always good! Juju gave me contact on ebay where i can get five for 2 quid but I'm not sure I will ever build in those quantities. I personally prefer paying for the look on the maplin peoples' face when I tell them what I want and why. priceless. My first build baby is done, i just need the usb lead from the camera to the comp which is currently residing in rochdale. Then you can look at my attempt. I am objectively chuffed by my efforts. Hope your first build is doing good. I have currently got a brass box which I need to fit in a bigger box and then see how it sounds. The bug is caught.
currently the pick ups are on the base of the neck (you will see when I upload the pics, but I think I will play around a bit more. I will let you know what sounds best.
    thanks for asking,
    ant
  • I got the piezo from Maplin here in Sheffield. They were about 89p which is good because it doesn't matter too much when the wires snap off which seemed to happen to about three of mine. But thats probably more to do with my big fat clumsy sausage fingers! Buy spares is my advice!
  • Hope the knee gets well soon! I'm just getting to the end of my first build now. Its been great. fun and challenging! Just plugged in the piezo I got and it WORKS! Amazing.
  • alright mate? u a manc? I'm from warrington originally.nice t'meetcha!
  • Hi Barrie,
cheers for the friends request. Hope you didn't take any offence about the northern comments. I was only having a laugh, but your comments on northern soul and economically deprived areas having a shared experience and therefore being attracted to their culture really made me think. A social history of homemade instruments.
