i'ts tricky. i usually go to a guitar store and take some measurements..pick a scale length, fender is 44 usually. then cut a 44 inch piece of wood and use it as your guide. my nut is 1.75''. so the taper is all the way from the bridge to the nut. i used medium high wide bass frets. pick up placement is tricky also. i made xerox copies of my pickups, cut them out and placed them on the box. then string it up just to make sure the strings hit the poles, when you can still move things around. 2.5 inches at the 20th fret. make sure you have adjustment at the bridge for intonation. good luck, have fun. any more questions, just ask. this one also has piezo pick-ups under the bridge. the wood piece under the bridge is 15 pieces of laminated wood.
Wow! Nice build !!!!! Love the tapered neck. I am just starting my first bass box guitar build and I am in the design stage and a lot of questions are coming to mind. What is the width of the neck at the nut and the 20th fret? At what point did you start tappering the neck? I will be using a custom box 19" x 12" x 6" black walnut and tiger maple, and a purpleheart stainless steel rod reinforced though the box neck. I still have to design the headpiece with the tuner placement. I will be using a zero fret with a bone nut and a custom free floating notched bone tipped bridge. What size frets are you using? Love your choices of woods!

I picked up the same box the other day for 8 bux and I've got an Asturcon bass neck, pups and wiring so this has given me an idea nice one :-)
