Diane, these days I to that by cross-cutting to the desired depth with the backsaw, and then chiseling out the bits. I finsih with the rasp. I originally did it all with the rasp, and might still if I use poplar again for a neck: oak is too hard to do that way.
That is going to be really great! Did you cut out a bit of the neck inside the tin so the top can ring? That can be a pain if you don't have a band saw - which I don't.
