Slot depth for bridges and nuts

Can you guys help me understand the physics behind slot depth?

What is worse: too deep or too shallow and why?

Is string buzz or other common issues attributable to incorrect slot depth?

Also: any tips for getting it right?

P-90 on a 3 stringer

Making new metal look vintage

Truss rod

I'm about to embark on my first bass (4-string) and I've been advised it'll need a truss rod.
