Here you can see I had 3.4cm (about 1.34") to work with. As I have short, fat and fairly uncoordinated fingers, I wanted 1/2" of space between strings. With 4 strings plus a bit on either edge of the fretboard, I'd need about 1.75". If I had gone with 3/8" string spacing I'd need about 11/8 (1.375") spacing. So, I guess my neck would have been wide enough for 4 strings spaced 3/8" apart. Next time I'll be more careful to do my my string space calculations before I select a piece of wood for the neck.
