Building a Banjo Neck, Photo 3

Here I am determining where to place the 5th String Tuner, which I made by modifying a standard tuner (I cut down the shaft and drilled a new string hole in the shaft, something that can be done easily enough using a hand drill). The 5th string tuner has to be located between fret #4 and fret #5. The shaft needs a hole drilled in the side of the neck (below the fretboard) about 1/4" above fret #5. Another hole will have to be drilled down thru thr fretboard and neck to allow the 5th string to be threaded through the string hole of the tuner's shaft. The key to locating the 5th string tuner is to decide on your scale length (VSL) and then go to a fret position calculator to see where frets 4 and 5 will be located. Then measure it down from the nut (or fret 0). You can see in the photo the lines I marked for frets 4 and 5.
