I know a chap who made violins and violas, he gave me some good advice but, more importantly, a viola neck which he had hand carved but was not happy with. One man's junk. I guess that's what our movement's all about! You got me with the 'franken-neck' though???!!!
Height was an issue for me, too, and anyone who is not an old-timey chest fiddler. I cut my box down a bit for the second one, and am building a custom box for the one still on the bench -- travel size. I went viola height, and have a viola chinrest that works on a taller box.
Nice scroll! Did you carve that or is it a franken-neck?
Yer, she likes it a lot and is surprised at the tone and volume that comes out of it ... even without the p/u. On the downside, she says it's a bit deep to fit comfortably under her chin (classical folk!!!) so I've got a shallower box for Mk2. B-)
Well, you can always whack off those top corners! Yup, that's the "cradle" type. I've only ever done a bolt on neck (disaster) and a sort of a neck-thru with a dowel running inside from heel to tailblock.
Love to hear your spouse playing it someday. How does she like it so far?
Hi JuJu, Tight but playable, but that should be the way for any 'beau' on an old fiddle! I'm planning a Mk2 and will pay more attention to the clearance next time.

very nice gonna have to try one of these some day - hows the bow action work out without any cutouts in the box ? dose the bow foul on the box ?
