Hi and thank you for the friends invite, the machine heads look great mate, thinking of doing some from cow/rams/buffalo horn, I have a set with the center screw at the top so they can be removed and replaced with some home made replacements, thanks again for the invite, Chris. :)
didn't mean to steal your thunder there bh.....but I'm a graphic artist by trade, so i've been around paint most of my life....i surely would sand them before I started though......give that paint something to bite into.....if you have access to a small air eraser (kind of like a mini sandblaster) tape off everything but the bean with a couple layers of duct tape, then lightly etch/blast the bean. Clean well, then do your thing. They'll surely last longer than not sanding that way.

YEp,John has it. No , I did not sand them, but that would have been a good idea. I used the paint straight, so it is kind of thick and made for painting plastic, so I hope it will wear well. I put dish soap in the water to break the surface tension. After dipping the tuner, I blew on the surface to move the paint away before pulling it back out.
I don't know how bh did it....but I know how i'd do it....oil and water don't mix.....so use a thin oilbased paint....'float' it on some water....swirl the colors together with a toothpick....then dip your object into the paint.....pull out...set aside....voila....very cool.....did you sand them with 500 grit before you started?.....
