Mark where you plan to cut the slot fo your slotted headstock. It should be at least 1cm wide and maybe 10cm long and centered along the mid-line of the head/neck assembly. While you do this verify that the tuner will fit as expected.

In this photo you can see I was concerned that cutting off a 1/4" chunk from the face of the headstock would weaken the headstock too much. That was 2 years ago. In most the instruments I've built since, I have not bothered with reinforcing the backside of the headstock, and it seems it;s strong enough that I don't have to. And this is especially true of the hardwood core necks I build these days.
