It can be surprising how much string height affects volume and tone. Seems to me low on the peg head end and a bit high on the lower end is the best compromise.
Reso tone with the action raised, banjo tone with low action. I have a fretless version with high action that sounds like a poor mans dobro.Strings mounted to the pan, and the pan riding on plastic washers so the pan does not touch the neck, and the strings drive the top pretty good..not too pretty but great tone.,.,sweet enough I forgot to add the piezo.,.,
