Old Box 6 String

One of my few 6 string builds. I needed one for an upcoming project since the guy playing with me only plays 6. I had a 3 string on this box but re-used it since it was the biggest one I had.

  • Man you can't beat $20! It will be interesting to see how that does look / play quality wise. I want to build another 6 but they are so daunting... and my necks are always so chunky for fear of warping. $20 can save a lot of grief... hmmmm...

  • Yup Derek, I'm cheating on my next 6 string since I found a rosewood, radiused, fretted, 25.5"scale fret board on ebay for less than $20. I'll have to check it's fret accuracy before I glue it to the neck I'm making.

I had to give this a try!

  • I always have issues with the high frets on the 6 strings, so think I may go shorter scale for fewer next time ;)  Flat is all I have done too, but you can get used to them. My parlor rescues are flat too. You should be good with a laminated neck - that looks great.

  • Thanks Derek. You're right about the more work part. Plus more problems leveling frets.I'm not totally happy with this one since it's a flat fret board like a classical guitar and a little hard to play. I still haven't gotten into making a radiused fret board except for fiddles and of course they're fretless. Add to that the fact that I don't use any steel re-enforcement so we'll see if I end up with any bowing problems.

  • Great looking git, JIm. I know how much more work goes into the 6 string necks.

  • Thanks Bluesheart.

    Thanks pick

    Thanks Jerry

  • Thanks Gary. I played sixes for many years and still do but fell in love with 3 strings when I made my first one.
