Lap Steel

Finally got around to finishing this after setting it on the self for a few years. C6 tuning, Poplar body with single coil pickup. The fretboard is from the how-to I did a few years ago on using 4" plastic zip- ties for fret markers. The bridge and nut are 1/2" alum angle polished with steel wool.

  • Glad you liked it.
  • Rooster - that IS a thing of beauty! Great color and thanks for the tip about the Apple Barrel pint & method.
  • Uncle ..... it works pretty good with the matt finish paints. I have not done one with gloss so can't say how that would go, but we put clear finish over our work so no real reason to use gloss. I'm about to finish up another project that I used orange color paint and water slide decals on. I will post some pics of it shortly. Just waiting on some tuners and have to finish winding the pickup ;-)
  • Thanks for the info.  I should try painting like that.  I am not a very good painter or stainer.

  • No not hollow..........solid poplar. The color is just Apple Barrel Turquoise acrylic paint from Walmart. Rubbed it on with a rag like you would stain, I get a better finish that way over brushing it on. Tru oil finish over that gives a nice finish. I was going for the 49' Buick look lol.
  • A beauty!
  • Crap. That is very nice. I like the color, shapes and design. I said crap because I am trying to quit building. And my best playing buddy has recently become very enthused about playing lap steel. I bet he might really dig it if I made him something like this.
Is this somewhat hollow bodied? If so, does it give it a bit of acoustic volume?
  • good looking lap steel. nice job.
