La Gloria CBG

This is my first build. I fell in love with the box at a cigar store and had to buy it. Three piece mahogany and walnut neck with truss rod, oak fret board, pre-ban ivory nut and bridge. The sound hole is the picture cut out and recessed. Just need to add electronics now.

  • I love it!!!  I have a box like this.

  • Well, I will warn you that it takes high skills to make a mando.  I have made a few, but not been satisfied with them.  The shorter the scale, the more critical it is to have the fret placement SPOT ON.  Use low frets.   You can get fret placement and scale on line from Stewart McDonald fret calculator.  A lot of guys attempt 4 strings mandos rather than 8s.  There is a mando section on the nation.

  • Thanks for the compliments.  I think I have found my new hobby.  I have already been commissioned to do a cigar box mandolin.  Anybody got any idea how to do that?  Learn as you go it seems...

  • Holey buckets.  I did not catch that was a sound hole at first.  Cool.  Like how the peg head lines repeat the box shape.  And that shape looks inviting to sit on you lap and play.

  • PS - now put some "half-moon" shaped fret markers on it!

  • Would never believe it was your first build.  Very sweet, very original.  Especially like the way you mimicked the body shape into the headstock and bridge.  Great job!

  • Sweet !!
