I was guessing about the headstock as i built it... ended up with the nut a little far from the tuners -- so made a string retainer -- filed the middle of the bolt smooth but left the end threaded. works like a dream and looks cool -- I'm gonna use this or one like it on all my future CBGs

hey chris, maybe you can see the eye hook angle in the photo -- I used slightly heavy eye hooks and screwed them in at an angle into the meatier rise of the wood (to avoid poking out the back of the neck, and to increase the resistance (?? I think you know what I mean). It looks like the strings are touching the wood, but they just clear the wood. I lucked out, and it seems such a tight tolerance it looks like I did it on purpose. -- I'm at work so I'll check your photos later... I can't wait to build my next one...
Hey Julian, Sure go ahead and use the retainer solve. I used slightly heavy eye hooks and screwed them in at an angle (to avoid poking out the back of the neck, and to increase the resistance (?? I think you know what I mean) -- the smaller eye hooks seemed so tiny and light duty. Also, maybe you can go slower than I did -- I ended up filing down a lot of the center and then when I installed it and tightened it up, the thread end pokes out farther than I want -- but hey it's the 'prototype' and it's solid and works dandy so I'll finesse that on future builds
I'll figure out the nut slot details on the next couple --- this one looks like it's floating in the groove, but actually fits pretty tight.
a also thought maybe I'd do a retainer at the bridge if move the bridge up farther onto the box. I swear the sharp break angle helps with the tone.
Brilliant string retainer idea Eric! I've been trying to think of a neat, easy way of solving this problem. May have to borrow it for a future build if you don't mind? Great guitar.
