Chugger Review 2nd from left

Got my Chugger done a while back. It is second from the left in the photo. It uses a 3D printer fret board applied with a self adhesive. I got the 3D printed fret board from Doug Thorsvik. Sure made for an easy and quick build.Doug also sent me two gauges of fishing line for the strings. It has surprisingly loud and rich thumpy sound. It is tuned GD, an open G. I marked the player side of the neck with all the chords.Doug calls them ONE FINGER Chords. They are that, but in a barre across the strings way. It does not take much finger pressure with the nylon strings and fairly close string spacing. I can also comfortably use two fingers to chord - a finger on each string.Doug brings home made music to a lot of folks with these chuggers. It lets people play songs almost instantly. It's kind of fun to pick up now and then. It can allow playing songs that I don't have the ability to play on other instruments.

  • Thanks. Ron.  I agree on the Padron boxes.  I think they are close to the best for looks and sound among true cigar boxes.  I have done that 2 string octave apart thing way in the past - and kind of forgot about it until you just reminded me.  Hmm.  May try that a bit again.

I enjoy ones, twos threes, fours, fives (open G minus the big string), sixes and twelves.  But I have the most fun playing fours: DGBE and GDGB- easy to play and right in my not so big vocal range.

  • Nice looking collection, I just finished 2 with the padron boxes, they are among my faves. I have made a few chuggers and am always shocked at how loud they are. Try tuning the strings to the same key on octave apart. They get really loud.

  • Thanks Glenn and Andries.  Andries, those cactus rock!

  • Oke ! Rock Caktus ! i got Ye ! Watersavers! and still Cool !

  • I love Doug's work too!! -Glenn

  • ALL really sweet Uncle John! Congrats! -Glenn

  • Andries and Alan, those are rocks painted to be cactus.  They are not too prickly and they are easy to care for.

  • Thanks guys.  Ha Brian.  I don't think I can play Iowa Sax and dulcimer very well at the same time.  Maybe if I just chord.

  • I’d love to hear you play that dulcimer with some Iowa sax :D

  • "A Fine Foursome of Instraments" I will get around to doing a Doug Style Chugger with Nylon Strings one day in the future, I'm intrigued as to what the Green Spotted Objects are in front, Pet Rocks ??, Cacti ?? :-)
