Thanks Richey. I think the dowel stick through the body works great for banjos and other instruments as well. I've made a few banjos with bolted or screwed on necks that worked OK but the dowel is a lot more solid.
Thanks Unc. I love the look and sound of natural skin even though the temp and humidity fluctuations can be a problem. My friend in Arizona told me to move out there and it will solve it!

This is lovely. I have wanted to make a banjo for ages. Would you say a truss rod is definitely required for a 5 string?
