For heels/heals, I generally just stack on another piece of the neck stock on the back of the neck, and the heel/heal it runs all the way through the box and butts up at the tail end inside. Then I can slice off a wedge of the neck portion that runs through the box to get a nice angle. After that, cut away about a 1/4" chunk from the center of that hidden neck part, leaving a bit on each end to hold up the lid of the box. That leaves the center part open to ring as loud as an old castoff cigar box can. If this makes no sense, there was just a diagram posted here http://www.cigarboxnation.com/forum/topics/which-glue-is-best-for that shows the cutaway -- but not the neck angle part.
On the profile pic, I think that is a scarf join. There is a whole thread about those I can link you to if you are interested. I'd never do that head again, though. So much drag over the string guides makes tuning a huge pain. But it has been my profile pic for so long, that there it stays.
I am sure you are waaaay further along on the luthier trail than I am! Your instruments are so interesting! Phintaro does not google, so I am really looking forward to seeing some larger photos.
Can you tell me more about "Thai" fretting -- what kind of scale is that? Does it relate in any way to the standard western scale? or the pentatonic?
