Diamond Bottlenecks do some really nice glass slides. Not the cheapest but they do put effort into getting a really nice finish and they'll make one to your specified dimensions. Also, they have some info on their site about the characteristics of different types of glass.
i think that is right.I prefer a heavy short(47mm - 1 13/16") brass, gives a fat sound with plenty of sustain, and heavy strings.I have made glass slides - surprisingly different colour glass gives different sound green and blue are good clear not so good.Quite like the "chromedome" slides but a bit top heavy and insensitive leading to flattened frets and dents in fboard as the dome end crashes down!Do not like ceramic - too clunky.
Never tried bone - the dog always gets there first!
As with many things in life, the choice is a personal thing.
I for example prefer a heavy brass slide, but I tend to use very heavy strings. For much lighter strings I have been known to use a lightweight steel slide.
I have also tried bottle necks, glass slides, ceramic slides, aluminium slides, lap steel bullets, specially shaped slides, razor edged slides, spark plug sockets, box spanners, cut down motorcycle handle bars, electrical batteries, pen knives and probably many more.
Bone slides are available from one or two suppliers.
Many slide players experiment with a large selection of slides until they find the one they prefer.
There's no "best", but I prefer glass bottlenecks (I make my own), as the weight and hardness are just right for me. Lots of peopel have made bone slides..I'm sure someone will have a few wise words on how its done.
