Hi all
My analogue Seiko tuner that I have had for over 20 year is starting to play up a little and I was thinking of geting a new one.
I have seen clip on types, which look ideal but having no experience of them I just wondered has anyone got a view or advice.
Also how do they fair tuning up CBG's
Best Regards
Prof.
Thanks to everyone for your comments. It has proved really helpful. I think on reflection I will go for the Snark Red.

go out and buy the most expensive tuner on the planet .. make sure you overpay alot for it .. then toss it in the garbage , and count it as a learning experiance . that you dont really need them for cbgs ;-)
Its a good point and quite revealing. I have not really used a tuner on a CBG, I just had a bit of Christmas cash available.

I like the clip on tuners. They come in a basic model like this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Clip-On-Digital-Electronic-Acoustic-G... but you are limited to the usual EADGBe with the option of dropping down two half steps in the tuning.
The other type is more flexible and they give you the option of guitar/bass/violin/chromatic so you can tune to what you want.

Cheapest option is off ebay from HK/China but the post can take up to 6 weeks (though often better than this). They work well on all the guitars I have - sometimes you have to readjust the position on the headstock to pickup the note but this is never a problem and takes seconds to do. The better ones let you select microphone rather than the clip to pickup the sound if you wish so if you have a CBG with too small a head to clip to you can still use it.
If you have a computer with a microphone AP tuner is a free shareware program which as well as the usual tunings lets you set up your own note presets in the menu.
Inexpensive and highly recommended. Happy Holidays Enjoy, Keni Lee
Prof,
I have a 15 year old analogue Seiko that I rarely use any more, for which I originally paid $60-$80.
I have used lots of these frequency-adjustable, chromatic, clamp-on tuners, from a variety of manufacturers, over the last 5 years, on my acoustics, electrics, and now, CBGs. They all tend to be in the $20-$40 range, and all generally work pretty well: various incarnations of Planet Waves designs; Korg; a few others that are back home in Saudi whose names I can't remember...I just picked up a Snark, and am gonna get a couple more. I just used one of them a few days ago to help clarify a tuning question I had for Keni Lee, which led to a most interesting discussion on tunings.
Go ahead, buy a couple or three; they're almost, but not quite, cheap enough to be considered, almost, disposable.
If you have a smart phone go to your market and search for guitar tuner app. The one called gstrings is free and gives you options for many instruments along with more options than you probably want.....but they are there if you need them. Your phone becomes a tuner. You'll never be without one again!
mine is a walmart first act. I would get another if this breaks down.
The Snark tuners can be hard to read in bright light, though. I like the black ones with a backlit display better.
Plus, I broke my Snark in about five minutes after I got it out of the box. The swivel neck is kind of fragile. Now it is held together with contact cement. >:-(
I wanted to like it! It is red!
Red is good but I got one at Guitar Center in a little box on counter and whatever one Mr Gitty sells plus the old analog and the newer analog and I got a lot of stuff. The currency really is worthless, you know.
There are quite a few online tuners out there. Obviously not much help if you're sat in a field with no PC, that's when the electronic tuner would be useful. For home tuning by ear I've found the two below quite good. Umpteen variations of tunings and for different instruments. Worth a look.
