I've been playing with a cheap Fender Squire Strat. It has 3 single coil pickups and a  5 position switch. Position 1 is the bridge pickup, 2 is bridge and center pickup, 3 - center pickup, 4 -…Continue

Keith Richards Plays in open G....

Many of you probably already know this but Keith Richards often plays in open G. He removed the bass string and plays with five strings so if you have a 4 string CBG tuned to open G, you are one…Continue

I have always striven for my CBGs to play well acoustically with the ability to amplify them with piezo pickups. this is my first stab at an electric guitar. I'm pretty stoked. Here is my Cohiba…Continue

"The Middle pickup is wound in reverse polarity of the Neck & Bridge pickup, so a combo of any two create a humbucker in theory. So, one of the coils has to be reverse wound from the next to make a humbucker? One wound clockwise & the other…"

Single coil vs. Humbucker pickups...

I've been playing with a cheap Fender Squire Strat. It has 3 single coil pickups and a  5 position switch. Position 1 is the bridge pickup, 2 is bridge and center pickup, 3 - center pickup, 4 - center and neck pickup and 5 - neck pickup. When using any single pickup, it has the clear sound you would expect from a single coil. When using either combo setting, it has the softer sound of a humbucker (and yes, actually "bucks the hum").Can pairing any two single coil pickups create the sound of a…See More

Usually amp designs have safety factor in the output impedance they can handle. What you have to remember is if you connect a lower impedance speaker your amp will be drawing more current. The output stage (transistors /ic ) will be running hotter, and without sufficient heat sinking could cause the output stage to fail during long periods of use. Higher impedance usually means lower output power.

Jim -  I saw your comment re back angle on the neck.  My purpose is to give me enough height at the bridge to fit my adjustable bridge (I posted a little article on that awhile back - although others have come up with much more refined designs) and ease the tediousness of set up.  Its not necessary if you can use a lower bridge.
