Starting with a nail and hammer, tap a starter hole for each point along the mid-line of the slot where you want to drill a hole. Then,beginning with your smallest drill bit, drill the holes thru the headstock. I usually skip every other drill bit size, but do go from small to bigger, and bigger, and bigger drill bits as I drill out these holes. As the drill bits get bigger, the space between the holes gets much less and finally some holes will join. Once you get done using a 1/4"drill bit, it'll be time to switch to a chisel to cut out the remaining wood,. After that rasps, files and sand paper can be use to shape and smooth out the slot.
