Once you have cut down the face of the headstock, cut the slot, and installed the tuners, usually the next step is to install the fretboard, then string up the instrument, using a bolt for the nut (as shown here) and a larger bolt and matching hex nut for the bridge. On this particular headstock I had to shim the tuners because the headstock was to narrow for the tuners. With a slotted headstock, you need tuners with the string hole mid-shaft. These days I use 6 or 7 slats of 0.5cm thick trim wood when laminating together my necks, so I avoid this shimming problem.
