JL, that's a good idea. I think it would be better because it wouldn't saturate the grape leaf wood pick guard. I'll store that one in my memory banks for the next time!
So you have created your second solo build. You are likely doomed to a long, productive series of cigar box instruments. More clamps are in your future, and a good supply of Tite Bond glue, too. Very nice work on the diddley bow, I made a couple of two string diddleys using piezos and metal bowl resonators. Not as pretty as yours, but a hoot to play. It's especially fun when I break one out for guitar playing friends (not cbg folks). Their eyes get wide, they say "Whaaaat?", then want to grab the slide and the thumb pick and have a whirl. Good times.
That's a good tip Jim. If I use one of these again, I'll be prepared with a platten. So true, we only ever need MORE clamps. We've never said, "we should get rid of some these clamps". :)
I'm sure your mother will like it. You can never have too many clamps! lol It must have been pretty thin veneer to curl up like that. A sheet of wax paper and a platten (flat board) clamped down sometimes helps but then the pieces can slip and you can't see what happened.
Alas, no, I didn't make the grape leaf myself Jim. I wouldn't know how to start. It's a wood pick guard that I ordered online and applied just for decoration on the opposite side. It was surprisingly difficult to glue on. Once I put the wood glue on the back, the whole thing curled. I had to use 5 large clamps to hold all the edges down. It was a bit of a circus! Thankfully it turned out alright. I'm just glad my husband had a bunch of clamps available. Originally I was going to keep the box plain, but I decided to dress it up a bit since I'm giving it to my mother. It's on its way to her now.

I wonder if aerosol can spray adhesive might work better at not curling the grape leaf wood pick guard?
