I used some toy packaging on the salad bowl. Stapled around the edges and hit it with a heat gun on low setting - keep it 4 - 6 inces from the piece and keep it moving around. The plastic shrunk up and after cooling became pretty tight. I'll probably make it into a test banjo uke to see how well it holds the string tension. The 3 liter bottle will be my next experiment.

Hey Rand, I used a heat gun on low. I think a hair dryer on high might work also. The salad bowl has a nice small drum sound. The plastic tightened up about like the natural skin heads I use. I'm hoping it will hold tension and not be affected by temp and humidity like the skin heads. I'll continue updating as I experiment more.
Okay, I understand a bit more. How did your first drum (the salad bowl with head made from toy packaging) sound? I mean as a drum using your thumb, fingers or a drum stick to beat a rhythm? The idea looks pretty promising. Keep us informed about your test results...
