jen, I've seen drums made with rawhide so I'm guessing it should work for string instruments as well. Probably give a whole different tone. Doggone it, now I have to experiment with rawhide!
Thanks Daniel, SEG and jen. Yes jen, the skin gets soaked in lukewarm water 15 -20 min. which makes it pliable. I pull it pretty tight as I work around with the tacks and let it dry 24 hrs. before putting any pressure on it. It gets real tight as it dries but the tightness varies from day to day depending on temperature and humidity.
