There was a dicussion a few weeks back that I can't find now concerning alternate material for banjo heads. Since then I came across some info on Banjo Hangout about shrinking soda bottles and other plastic. It should have the "peta 1" symbol in the recycle triangle.

So, what are you using as a heat source, a hair dryer on hot/high? So you say a "peta 3" symbol on the recycle triangle should mean the plastic can shrink when heat is applied. I guess I should give it a try. Will have to wait till tomorrow.
