It looks like this on the inside, and the neck bolts to the bit that sticks out the front.
I hollowed out the book ages ago by gluing it shut with a mixture of woodglue and water applied to the sides of the pages, then I used a stanley knife to cut through loads of pages at once - not that hard to do, takes about half an hour. There are probably plenty of instructions on the internet for hollowing out books.
No, it is a vintage 1965 Oxford University Calendar I had lying around my house. An entirely useless piece of literature because it is no longer 1965, but a very nice hardback cover!
