New paddle box dulcimer

The paddle box design seems the easiest approach to sound box building if you have no cigar or other boxes on hand. This one uses two strips of 3cm x 0.5cm trim wood glued onto a length of hardwood (that forms the head and neck). The two strips of trim wood extend about 10 or 12 inches beyond the end of the neck to form the side walls or the sound box. A 7" long end block (built-up using 3 short length of trim wood glued back-to-back to increase the thickness) is wedged between the two ends to form the roughly triangular shape of the paddle box. Once this frame is glued and dried, use it as a template to cut a sound board and backboard from a sheet of 2mm plywood veneer. Glue them on, let dry, and file down the rough edges and you have your basic box, neck and head all ready for finishing. Under the fretboard, glue on a special cut long rectangular piece of 2mm plywood veneer to avoid the bump (un-level-ness) that occurs after you have glued on the sound board.

  • Looking good, Rand!  My own paddle box "journey" is on hold for a while as I figure out how to deal with some issues caused by my own ham-handedness, but I will get them back on track.  BTW - how are you doing?  Hope all is well.
