This is my 4th guitar and my first resonator. I couldn't find a box big enough, so I built one out of oak (for the sides) and birch plywood. The resonator is from Old Lowe. Curly maple neck with purpleheart fretboard.

Beauty. Some of the Cohiba boxes are just large enough for a Lowe cone. I've built 3 with the 8" cones and just finished one with a 9". Big difference in sound.
I made a bit of a hybred. It is a "stressed" paint can lid reso. I hammered around the edge of the lid to put some stress on the metal. Some people really like the sound. I have a problem with the individual strings feeding back sound to the other strings. Not as clear as I would like.
Thanks for the reso info. Maybe some day....I am doing a series of ukes now. Tall Ship ukes.
It's a neck-through body, just did a really deep drop where the reso is located. I like the added stiffness it gives the guitar body, and it also gave me something to anchor the mandolin tailpiece to.
How did your paint can lid resonator turn out? I tried a license plate reso but wasn't thinking and picked the wrong kind of bridge. Now the license plate is just there for effect. Live and learn.
Nothing wrong with fame. I keep wanting to build a real reso, like yours. I don't quite know what to do about the neck through body. Did you just make a very deep neck drop inside the body or is the neck just connected to the front like a standard guitar?
I did build a paint can lid resonator, but it isn't the same.
Hi Gary, yeah, I was really pleased with how it turned out. Learned a bunch in the process, and it took a while to figure out what worked best. In retrospect, I would have done a couple of things differently. It now resides in New Mexico with a friend of mine, a professional recording artist. I'm on my way to fame ;)
