My Daughter's First Build

My daughter will be 7 in a couple weeks and we built this together with her doing most of the work. She chose the box from the stack, painted it to her liking, helped shape the neck, cut the fret slots and hammered the frets. I strung it up with neon green strings 5,4,3 and tuned DAD on a 20" scale. Fretted 2,3,5,7,10,12,15,17,19 and it sounds great. I tried to buy it off her this morning and she wouldn't let it go.

  • She should make you beg to play it, and I'd bet you would!

  • Thanks Bluesheart.  Yes, it sounds great.  I had that box squirreled away for future use and when it came time for her to choose one, she grabbed it.  I was a little sad to see it painted, but I knew there was no way to say "no" to her about it.  And I have NO TROUBLE saying "no."  But not for this.

She loves it and I can't wait to hear what she starts to pick up for playing.  She and her sister are busy making beautiful, awful duets on their lunchbox ukes at the moment.

  • I bet it sounds awesome with that large box. great job to both of you!

  • I think pick may be on to something - that paint job is seriously kewl. Maybe you should have her decorate all your builds? Kid's got a good eye for color and design.
  • Thanks Pick.

The negotiation concluded with her allowing me to play it whenever I liked.  I'll take it.

Looking at the picture I'm thinking I added fret 14 in there and ended at 17.  Whatever.  It sounds great any note and any string.
