Here you can see the diatonic fret spacing on the fretboard. Notice how string 3 disappears just above fret 4 only to re-appear at fret 0 and the nut. Between frets 1 and 3 (inclusive) the third string is routed in a specially cut grove that runs in the neck under the fretboard. On the dulcijo, the third string is like the 5th string on the 5-Sting banjo.
