My second "mountain dulcimer" with a 50cm VSL, a 24" x 6" x 2" sound box and a "neck-almost-thru-the box" with an elevated fretboard. Close up of headstock. Can see how the head/neck assembly is mounted like a cigar box guitar and runs the length of the sound box, but it does not go thru the tail end of the box. From this photo, you can also see how the fretboard was elevated above the soundboard. So, the neck and elevated soundboard come into contact with both sides of the soundboard for the entire length of the soundboard. This arrangement seems a lot easier to make given my experience with building both cigar box guitars and stick dulcimers, and is a "cleaner" head attachment than my first mountain dulcimer.
