It's best to take your time and carefully mark where you plan to make your cuts to make the necessary fingers and holes for your box joints. Notice that I mark the pieces that will be chiseled out with an "X". For a tighter fit, I usually cut (saw) both boards at once, and then flip one over so the fingers and holes fit right. Got to pay attention to which sections are chiseled out.
