When I saw Shane's post on the 2x4 lap steel, I thought I just have to make one of those. I made the guitar over a couple of days but had to wait for the humbucker pickup to sail over from the Orient. I used my table saw to cut the head and pickup slot and then hand tools for shaping. After a cursory sanding the whole lot had a coat of satin varnish. Pop rivets were used to hold the strings, countersunk on the rear.I've got her tuned to G at the present and we'll see how that goes. Sounds good though through a Roland Cube amp.Now I have to learn to play the darned thing!

Uncle John - the jack is mounted on a brass plate and sits in a 3/4" hole about 1" deep made with a forstner bit. A hole runs thru from the pup slot for the wire. As you can see it faces away from you when playing.
The artwork is drawn freehand with a fat permanent marker, then varnished.

Thanks on the jack, Jock. That should not weaken things by much and the placement is handy.
Thanks for the kind comments guys.

Excellent!
Looks real good. I have one started. Hmm. I wonder if I can borrow from your idea on the jack placement. Huh. Not sure how to do mine.
