The plate is flush with the fretboard. Put her all back together, but now in its lowest position the strings hit it when you fret past the 12th.fret. If I loosen the bolts any more it will come apart- what is the solution, use longer bolts? Will that work with the springs? Looks as though by using longer bolts I could theoretically lower the pickup lower than the top of the fretboard.Question: is it possible to try using longer bolts without taking half the guitar apart- like is the pickup going to come undone if I try changing them one at a time?

  • Good!!!
  • She won't cave in, that's for sure. Nice work Monterey.

  • There's a strut around the pickup you can't really see in the picture made with a piece of 1/4" Oak sandwiched between 2 more of these Spruce braces
  • Thanks, Dave. I made the braces patterned after the original Kapok ones from the guitar I salvaged the neck from. Made them from a Spruce 2x4 I dimensioned on the tablesaw, and did the ends with a knife and sandpaper
  • Nice x brace there. Monterey.
  • Me too Uncle!
  • Ha, ha.  Glad you got it done.

  • Thanks Uncle. Had lots of room underneath, just needed to use longer adjusting bolts for the pickup. Got a couple off a recepticle- same threads as the ones used to screw the recepticle to the box. Now the pickup will come down as low as the wood ring I made, and that is the height of the fretboard. Much better this way anyways for if you have to do anything with the pickup, it was a trick getting it out before, and next to impossible to put it back in!
Now I just need to find an amp
  • Looks good.   I had about the same problem on my big box tenor.  I was able to take a bit of stock out from under the pickup to make it go lower.

  • Yeah, had to put the wood surround because I did previously have the pup mounted on the top, and it was over 1/4" away from the strings when I had it raised all the way
