    I usually go for the worn look, I like them to play well but look like they've just been dragged off a skip. I usually use a few different techniques, I start with a few grades of sandpaper, then burn the wood in a few small spots and usually add a dark wood stain after in a few small places..... then go over the whole thing with some really fine sandpaper (2000 grit) to smooth and finish the look... and on this build I added a few random pieces of rusty pie tin.
    But every build is slightly different so it's usually just about knowing when to stop.
