Two pieces of Formica samples, with a bunch (quantity unknown) wraps of 42 gauge wire. Seems to work pretty good for the initial test. More testing to follow.

Nice creation. Looks like some very fiddly work on there to connect the leads and anchor them to the formica so as not to tug at the windings. How exactly did you do that?
I'd ignore the ohms figure if I were you. It always amuses me when people start quoting resistance figures for pickups as if they actually meant very much. The only meaningful thing it tells you is if the resistance is higher you've put a longer length of wire on there than if it turned out lower. But the number itself doesn't mean a lot and 1.8k on one pickup can be different from 1.8k on another...and don't even start me on the way people confuse resistance with impedance.
If you want to know what actually governs sound then it's a whole lot of other stuff. Frankly the main thing that's really important is that it works and it seems to work pretty well.
I really did not count how many winds. I just wound until I got sick of doing it. I put the ohm meter on it, and I got 1.8K. Not particularly hot, but it works.
