One more little tip. I was fixing an old fiddle and found the sound post had a piece of yarn tied to the sound post. ??. I found it useful to use it when installing it back in after my repair. It takes me several tries installing. The post tips over just as it is twisted into place. If I pulled the yarn I could retrieve it without shaking the fiddle upside down. Expletives... I ,ve tied thread to each sound post since.
Once installed it can be coaxed around with homemade hooks made out of scapwood. I now find it much easier if I set the post when the top is glued on. A little tricky, but it works. Then I can move it around a little with the hook. It takes me a couple of tries at getting the post cut and sanded to fit just right. Up to 3 posts cut till one works. :^)
Oh yeah, it also helps support the top and it's not recommended to bring a "normal" fiddle up to pitch without the soundpost in place as the top could easily crack.
Yeah Bruce, as al said placement is the key. Traditionally it's about 1/8" behind the treble foot of the bridge but small adjustments can make it louder or mellower and no two are alike. I usually start with that 1/8" and then play with it if I feel it's needed.
Thank you Dave and Jim. Big f holes for sound post setting was part of my design. Now, I've heard that the sound post helps transfer vibration to the back of the instrument, but how is it supposed to affect the sound? Will it be fuller, deeper, louder?
