I have to say, I'm guilty of not always using a push stick. Smaller pieces, I always do but if I'm pushing something with 2" to clear the blade, I don't always. The only one it have is the one that came with the saw. I find that I don't have the control I want. I need to make some that work the way I want them to work.
I might add that in the name of safety, don't become complacent. I worked with a guy that became complacent. We were running slots in 4×4's for skids. The dado blade was 3/4 inch. He decided to stop using his push stick. Long story short, his thumb was gone from the tip down to start of the thumbnail. There's no sewing that back on. It was just.....gone...always use a push stick
I started woodworking at that same age. 33 years later I can still count on all my fingers. Cannot stress safety enough. Totally agree with the dust collection comment too. It's nice to see the younger generation working with their hands. That seems to be a lost talent these days. Stick with it young man, master it and take pride in what you make. It's a valuable skill.
I've been woodworking for a long time. Until the last few years, I really had no kind of dust collection system and never wore a dusk mask. Stupid! Now I have a dust collector, a homemade 4 filter air cleaner, and wear a mask. I've had wood chips blow into my eyes so I always wear eye protection. Ear protection....I started using that when I got tired of spending a few hours running saws and getting a headache. All good things to have and I use them all every time I'm down there. I actually think keeping the dust out of your lungs is more important than eye protection. Going blind would suck, but lung problems are deadly.
Great! I agree safety first.,.,good to see the goggles and ear protectors.,,.I have exploded so much wood on the table saw, and picked plenty of splinters out of my face in the old days.,.,a wonder i'm not blind.,.,
