Fretting

Toothpick frets! I made the lower octave chromatic, and the upper octave diatonic. Otherwise, with an 18" scale, they get close together!

  • This kind of looks like a sawfish's snout!  (Wonder if that would work?...)  These are the round 'fancy' kind, and I took some quick diameter measurements with calipers to try to keep them closer in diameter.  I'd not done that before, but figured it couldn't hurt.  I've used toothpicks and either wood glue (or super glue like here), and seem to get good results.  They're easy to dress 'flat' - I adhered some fine black oxide paper onto a really flat board to aid in this.  Didn't remove much, and didn't bother reshaping individual frets.  I think "Diamond Brand" may be higher quality?

  • Interesting. Gary I tried tooth pick frets recently with poor success. Builer error, I am sure.
