Finished Reso

Finished my first resonator, also my first fret board. It uses a Havana Honeys box with a four inch tin can for a resonator. It's surprisingly loud for a small box.

  • Yup, pan goes in bottom.  The pan is not absolutely necessary....it's something you can play with later.  Mine took a lot of farting around and cutting to get it to fit in there.  It was a Bakers Square pie tin so it ws a little more rigid....not a tinfoil one.  Hope this helps...good luck guys.  Email me when yours are finished.
  • I,too,Been wanting to make one ,, pls picture us up as training
  • JP, where does the pan go?  The guitar's bottom?
  • Wow!  Thanks guys!   I'm honored.

Lou, this one also has an aluminum pie pan in it that really makes a difference.  It seems to project the sound better than just the wood box.  It was tricky to fit in there and took a lot of time and effort fitting it in, but well worth it.  Good luck with your build!

  • Hi JP.  I had been wanting to build a reso but wanted to try something other than a cone.  I remembered this build and decided to try it.  It looks really good.
  • Pro looking build there JP.  Nice biscuit, frets, heel, box, tail, sound holes and peg head.
  • Forgot to mention.... I did end up putting some hot glue around the can on the inside of the box.  Not because it didn't fit tight but because I started getting what I can only describe as distortion in the sound.  The glue solved the problem though.  You'll see it in the picture.
  • Hey Rand!  Thanks.  Remember, I vowed to try my hand at frets with your encouragement!  This is the product of that encouragement....so, thanks for the push!

To answer your questions..... It sounds exactly like you'd expect it to, surprisingly!  I can't believe the tone!   I have a real six string reso and I just love that metallic zing!   I cut the hole very carefully with a Rotozip hole cutting attachment and the can fits really snug in the hole, just hanging by the lip of the can.  The pressure of the strings holds it in place.  I'll take a picture of the inside of the box for you.

  • That's looking really nice. Chromatically fretted. How does the can resonator sound? And hos did you finally mount it in the box? I'm thinking of doing one before I go off the deep end and buy some reso cones from Old Loew. Just to have an idea how well can resonators work.

    -Rand.
