Thanks, y'all! The sound holes were a necessity -- you can't have any more than 4.5 inches at the waist or you'll clip the box with the bow. I made a dry-fit seeing if I could leave the box at 5.5 inches, but no. I think I saw this idea here somewhere, or maybe on the old Yahoo forum.
But this means there are lots more boxes out there that can be used, so long as your cut-outs bring the box in to 4.5. I"ve got a pretty Don Thomas (the black and gold one) that is 6", I'll try to clip that one in and we'll see how it looks.
Its simply beautiful ,I LOVE your idea of putting the sound holes on the sides hinting of the traditional shaping of a fiddle shape.You pay extra attention to the smallest detail.
A lot of us wish we could build anywhere NEAR your caliber.
