Marcus depending on how thick your wood sandwich is, you might be fine with a little bit of pine in there with the hardwood. Thanks. This here neck is finished with 6 or 7 coats of spray lacquer. I think the fret board got Tru Oil. Lately I have been using Tru Oil on most of my fbs that aren't all maple (tung oil for those) and I really like it ...a lot. ... Hey Pat!: Thanks, I had to flip the headstock orientation on this one!
Thanks SD. Yeah, I call my basement The Crypt as lighting and headroom are so low....labeling stock makes a lot of sense. I'll carry on with the neck and see what happens....if it's pine the top 2 string section will warp if you aim a fart in its direction! You using Tung oil as a finish? Looks really nice.....
Thanks Marcus. Yeah. it is possible you got a piece of pine, but even maple can vary a little bit in color. If it is pine, you should be able to tell, as it will be considerable lighter-weight and softer. I go lumber shopping with a fist full of crayons, and label everything before I drive away from the mill, as there are some dark corners in my shop where the poplar can start looking like maple.
Question about maple: I just glued a neck, vertical 3-ply laminate with maple on the outside and a strip of poplar in the middle just to vary the colour. I see that one piece of maple has a gorgeous red colour but the other one looks kinda like pine (colour-wise). Is that variation normal or did I mebbe grab a chunk of wood that was 'relocated' by a lazy customer??????
