  Actually, I think the "frame" is the wooden surround you can see in the lefthand pic. The extra wooden bit in the righthand pic is actually part of the packaging - the confusion might arise because of the packaging is the spare wood left when he cuts out the shape of the frame. If you look on his website the "naked" versions of the pickups have no wood at all, just the coils.

  I'd say without it seems to show off the copper windings better and with that design it works.
