This is my first build of a tack head banjo. It took awhile, but I finally finished it up. Now I need to learn to tune it and play it.

  • "Yes Jim, the inner hoop is used to tighten the skin with the screws on the 6 adjusters the hoop is sitting on."

  • Hi Doyle

    Great job on the banjo. I have plans to build one maybe this summer if I can find the time. I'm building in that direction, and recently completed a 4-string "Reso-Box" banjo. I'll have access to a real wood working shop this summer and plan to work on building a few neck and round drum frames which I can bring home to China and finish off. I'll need to buy some sheep skin and lots of tacks as well. I been thinking of implementing a similar head tensioning system as it appears you have done. Well, good luck with learning to play the banjo. Hopefully, you know someone that can teach you. Learning to play by yourself is a tough way to do it. But, the videos on Youtube should be helpful.

    ==> Jim:

    It does look like an internal head tensioning system like we were discussing in the Banjo Player's Unite discussion group a couple of months ago. Here's a link to that thread if anyone is interested... link  Scroll down to the section called "III.) Tack-Head Banjo Internal Head Tensioning System".

  • Thanks for this rear view. Is the tension on the head adjustable with that inner hoop?
