Uncle John, if your friction tuners are not holding it's usually just the screws on the buttons need tightened a little. If they still won't hold, add a small washer between the button and the screw. I think geared tuners look wrong on little ukes. They look huge.
I'd like to hear that uke Uncle John. Those old friction tuners probably didn't work too good even when they were new! When I replace them I sometimes grind down the shaft and drill new holes for the strings if they're sticking up too high.
Looks super. I have one just made from a salvaged Supertone uke. The friction tuners will not hold tune. Think I will put a spacer on the back and install geared tuners.
