I hear you Dave. I'm suffering from a case of "bow shoulder" right now. More time than normal getting ready for some gigs and getting new builds played in. Nowadays guitar is nice and relaxing for me but fiddle, as you say, is a workout.
Pleasing sound isn't yet in my fiddle vocabulary. I like the lap play. Holding with my chin hurts. I have no style but I love playing. Very physical with the bowing. A little workout...
Yup Dave, I've used and built narrow boxes so I wouldn't need a cut out. This size is easier to hold since I can't play worth a durn holding on my lap. Plus, the larger boxes have a mellower, more pleasing sound to my ear.
It's a very striking cutaway. It shows off the cigar box nicely. I've just been using narrow boxes like 5 lb. cheese boxes and tins. Your wide body would play better on your chin position, mine are for lap play.
Thanks Dave. I try to make the cutaways and the width of the "waist" pretty close to a regular fiddle so the bow won't contact the box sides when playing the two outer strings.
