Thanks guys. Popular opinion from many is that it is black locust which is typical for fence posts. I had a forester look at a sample under a microscope and she thought it looked a lot like chestnut and less like black locust. I don't know what to call it except old, cool, rustic and fun to play.
I'm leaning toward making most of these slides from brass. I really like the look and the tone.
