AGP #376 - ''Dave''

Progress report for AGP #376, a “Dave Lynas” style 2 String Cheroots Bass/ Cello, Neck & Box Slot “Done & Dusted”, tried to use similar materials to Dave, but most were unavailable in the Land Down Under, not sure exactly what Timber Dave used for the Neck, but I tried to lay my hands on a solid piece of Pine or Poplar for the one piece Neck, but couldn’t, so decided to Laminate one from what I had on hand, which was some recycled Radiata Pine and Forest Red Gum, It was not an easy thing to make without a decent Bandsaw but I managed, and as Murphy’s Law Dictates, while searching for a piece of timber to use for a Fretboard, I found hidden away in a corner, a lovely piece of European Spruce that would have done the job nicely, also only had one Parlour Style 2 Hole Open Gear Tuner on hand, looked hard to find some on Ebay, all that was available was 3L/3R from Gitty, but was reluctant to pay the $27.34+ AUD price tag, and wait 2 weeks plus for delivery, so went with 2 enclosed tuners. Will start the Wiring and Sound Holes etc., tomorrow, still undecided as whether to Lightly Stain and Coat the Cheap Chinese Ebay Wine Carrying Box, with the same Gloss Wipe On Poly I used on the Neck or not. :-)

  • "Thanks Dave", glad you cleared up the choice of strings question, the middle 2 G & D strings makes perfect sense, will have to see what the bottom 2 G & C strings sound like, I have no idea what gauge the cheapie Ebay strings are, tried to search and find out with no success, best I could come with is they are of a very light gauge, used a 20mm Forstner drill bit mounted in my Bench Drill Press to cut out most of the Peg Box hole, and tidied it up with a sharp chisel, the similar size 22mm pine laminate of course did make the process a lot easier!, I put a coat of light "Old Baltic" on it late yesterday, but wasn't very happy with the look when I checked first thing this morning, and as all my other stains are reasonably dark I spent a bit of time this morning mixing some of the lighter ones with the dark ones, currently drying in the Sun, will get a couple of coats of lovely Gloss Wipe On Poly, during the day, and then it's just a matter of putting all the pieces together, drilled a couple of sound holes in the top to suit a pair of Stainless Steel Cupboard Vents, but not sure whether it looks better with or without them.   :-)

  • You may be right AGP. Might be the 3 and 4 string on Cheroots. Yup, 3 & 4. My earlier Cheroots were 2 and 3. And yes peg boxes are tricky. Getting the peg well deep enough to get the string on the peg shaft without hitting the bottom of the well usually takes me a Dremmel router bit workout to get it deepened at string up time. Never gone through the bottom yet though. Then there’s the button hitting the edge of the scroll. That usually takes me back to the belt sander to thin the bottom of the scroll. I see yours has the button very close to the scroll. :*). You got the peg box slot very accurate. The laminated ears are proof of your centering of the slot. You did a fine job of it AGP.
  • "Thanks 'UJ', Poorness & Bones, hasn't quite got the "Hands on Rusticity" of a Dave Lynas Build, but I'm happy with the way its going with the materials I had on hand, however Bones!, as good as the Lynas'y Peg Box looks, it did test the patience of this normally very impatient CBG builder!

    :-D

  • "Thanks Dave", the Box is the last of 3 Chinese Ebay Wine Boxes I purchased some time back, the Top and Bottom is 3mm Pine Ply  and the Sides are 8mm Solid Pine, and yes!, I do have a set of cheap Ebay Cello Strings, specifically bought for this build, But!, I'm now a little confused, in your sound demo of Cheroots, I seem to remember you saying you used the Bottom 2 Strings and not the Middle 2 as stated here ??, and yes there will be sound demo when finished, after I brush up on my Bass Cello Skills, (which are at the moment, non-existent  :-D

  • Yep Lynasesk  indeed AGP looking big n beautiful mate digging the peg head .

  • That is very Lynas. ;-)
  • Ah.  Now I see why it's Dave.  Looking very good.

  • Looking good AGP ! Looks like a nice big box. Do you have Cello strings? I use the middle strings from an inexpensive set of Cello strings. I do use poplar for my necks lately. And my Big Box has a Padauk fingerboard. Can’t wait to hear her play !
