AGP #217 - ''Saw 2''

AGP #217 - “Saw 2”(3 String Box Guitar)Scale: 660.4mm / 26 inchesStrings : .0.50NW / .038NW / .028NWTuning: F#/C#/f#The Manzer Wedge Design Box and Neck are a mixture of different recycled timbers, a “Jarrah” (an Australian Hardwood)Stain was used and then finished with a Timber Polish, containing a mixture of Beeswax and Carnauba Wax. More than happy with the way wedge shaped box sits and plays, and would thoroughly recommend this type of shape, especially for the Big Box builds.A 7.8k - Chinese Ebay Tele Type Neck Pickup is fitted to the neck and sounds great on both clean and dirty settings.A 19k – 2nd hand Ebay 7 String Ibanez Humbucker, was originally fitted under the saw blade, held in place by its own magnetism, trebly to the extreme, and also squealed, screeched and squawked to the extreme, next step was fixed it to the top the neck below the saw blade with abt 5mm clearance, which was a little bit better but still crappy, next step put a Gitty Gold Foil Pup under the strings, also not a success, then insulated it between the saw blade, not much better, it’s now glued to the top of the neck and at best sounds very thin and trebly so I will probably just use the Neck Pickup and use the Gold Foil Pup in another build.Originally had 2 large and 4 smaller springs positioned at different points in the box, and after a lot of changing and experimenting sounded best with just the 2 larger ones, I think the springs do make a difference to sound,If I was to build another one, (and I probably will) the Manzer Wedge design is a definite yes!, I would just use one Neck Pup, possibly with Tone control, fix the saw blade in a different manner, and experiment a bit more with springs and snare type combinations in the box. Will hopefully post a vid soon, still have to work out how to drive the little Video Recorder I purchased and buy a silly hat and vest to wear ;-).

  • "Thanks" darryl kernaghan, Yes the blade does have metallic sound to it, but don't know if you call it a ring, hope to post my first Vid soon (with this build).

The springs are not touching the sound board at the moment, I'm still doing a bit of experimenting with how many springs and where they sound best, and thank you for your tips & ideas!!!

  • "Thanks" Maddog

  • "Thanks 'UJ', if I can get out of my shed and stop building CBG's, my New Years resolution is to post some Vids!!!!

  • That looks awesome Brother!

  • Gee,that looks great AGP,does the blade have a 'ring' to it? My experience with springs is they need to be stretched 80-90%,and just barely brushing your soundboard /saw blade just enough to get them buzzing, hope it helps

  • Man, it looks great.  I hope to hear an AGP build some day.  Better yet with AGP at the camera.

  • Soon! I hope Jim, my eldest son has been bunked down in the Guitar Cave, he just went back to work drilling in the western desert for a month, so just trying to reorganise a few things to attempt my first vid, haven't even opened the new recorder yet!

  • "Thanks" Ron, Yeah! very happy with the look of this one.

  • It does look good!

  • C'mon AGP we gotta hear how that saw blade sounds! Sure looks good!
